14-19 Reforms 'Require Better Collaboration'

Many areas still have much to do if they are to provide teenagers with a range of educational options by 2013, according to a report published by the National Audit Office.

This is a vital part of government reforms to improve the attainment and participation in education and training of 14-19 year olds, primarily by blending general education with applied learning.

The NAO report, Partnering for success: preparing to deliver the 14-19 education reforms in England, published on December 13, said that effective local collaboration' through 14-19 partnerships would be 'fundamental to the successful implementation of the reforms'.

While the NAO found many examples of genuine collaboration between local institutions and people, it also found many where this had yet to happen.

Auditor general Sir John Bourn said: 'Getting these reforms right will be vital to the futures of many of our young people. …
