Honolulu Symphony Bounces Back

After a shortfall kept orchestra musicians from being paid, donations totaling more than $450,000 have helped the Honolulu Symphony get back on its feet. The Symphony's 65 full-time musicians, all members of Local 677 (Honolulu, HI), continued to perform during the shortfall as the Symphony Association worked to get its payroll back on track. After the restoration of a previous 20% pay reduction at the beginning of the 2007-08 season, the symphony was forced to vacate its regular performance space due to a long-term production of the musical The Lion King. The subsequent decline in revenue from performances in other venues contributed to December's shortfall.

"Our challenge is to keep our morale high," says Orchestra Committee Chair Paul Barrett. "We need to keep pressing and get our pay in line with the board's stated goal."

Michael Largarticha, president of Local 677, says that he has been in almost daily contact with orchestra management. "There's a long way to go," Largarticha says, "but there are good people in place, and they believe in the symphony."

Largarticha also cited support from Hawaii's two Senators, Daniel Inouye and Daniel Akaka, a member of Local 677, in helping the Symphony's musicians during the financial difficulties.

Monder, a member of Local 1 (Cincinnati, OH), has been the CSO's president for 31 years and is the longest-serving chief executive of a major American orchestra, according to the League of American Orchestras. Monder's retirement was acknowledged by the CSO's board members and musicians during a January 11 rehearsal.
