Instructor/trainer required: Initially, yes, although the machines are available for home use (at a price), and some studios (including Station Studios in New York) offer group classes rather than the traditional one-on-one model.

Purported benefits: A full-body workout on speed: 10-12 minutes is equivalent to about an hour in the gym, thanks to a pneumatic-style vibration plate that works every muscle in the body. Research also suggests that it can reverse the effects of osteoporosis.

Possible downsides: Critics claim the excessive vibration exceeds occupational safety standards applied to other vibrating thingies, such as helicopters.

Our experience: Remember how you felt the first time you went to a Six Flags? It's kind of like that without the cotton candy. Or the screaming.
