Expert Argues for One Public Equality Standard

The existing patchwork of equalities duties should be replaced with a single statutory duty and extended to all public sector bodies, local government's equalities adviser has told Public Finance.

Angela Mason, who until last year ran the government s Women and Equalities Unit, said there was a good case for replacing the individual public duties that cover race, disability and gender.

Mason, who is now the Improvement and Development Agency's national adviser on equalities and cohesion, told PF: 'There should be a public equality standard... applying whether it's the fire service, police, local government or education. It would relate to both their workforces and the businesses they deliver.'

Mason first floated the idea of a single equalities duty when, as head of the WEU, she produced an equalities green paper last June. …
