Roy Ayers, I must admit, is someone that despite listening to this music for many years (more than I want to admit to) is a person I know little about musically as well as biographically. Therefore, this disc's arrival is a pleasant surprise. Ayers is a native of the City of Angels. He worked with and recorded with various West Coast musicians in the 50's and 60's but in the 1970's began to branch out into music other than jazz. His work here is fine mainstream jazz much in the vein of Milt Jackson but maybe not as bluesy.

Ayers plays and leads with authority and has excellent West Coast musicians on this recording, albeit some are transplants. He went on to a rather lengthy recording career for Atlantic Records but must confess I cannot comment on these. …
