National Catholic Colleges Week Scheduled for February 17-23

Week focuses on distinctive attributes of Catholic colleges

The Catholic higher education community celebrates its many strengths during the annual Catholic Colleges Week. This year the observance is scheduled for Feb. 17-23 and it will celebrate the long-standing virtues, successes and impact on the world that Catholic colleges and universities have demonstrated.

The Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities (ACCU) and the National Catholic College Admission Association (National CCAA) sponsor the week. Like its NCEA Catholic Schools Week counterpart that has a long history of promoting the national profile of Catholic elementary and secondary schools, Catholic colleges and universities will use this week to share the collective characteristics, advantages and spirit of the 220 Catholic colleges and universities in the United States.

The purpose of National Catholic College Week is to promote the value of Catholic higher education nationally within the Catholic Church, the education community and, where appropriate, the general population.

A committee of Catholic higher education and secondary professionals will work to advance the objectives of National Catholic Colleges Week. These include:

1. Integrate Catholic college involvement in a focused promotion of Catholic higher education.

2. Develop a partnership with Catholic secondary schools in promoting Catholic colleges.

3. Initiate involving the church at the parish level in promoting Catholic colleges.

4. Establish a forum by which the Catholic and higher education media can embrace Catholic higher education.

"We strongly believe that there are distinct attributes at Catholic colleges and universities," said Tom Fanning, director of undergraduate admission and retention at John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio, and president of the National Catholic College Admission Association. "We are using this as an opportunity to stress to people in the Catholic community the reasons to encourage students to consider Catholic colleges and universities."

The National Catholic College Admission Association produces the "Official Catholic College and University Guidebook," an impressive 200page, four-color publication featuring colleges and universities nationwide. The guidebook is distributed nationally. The publication is released to all Catholic secondary school guidance counselors during National Catholic Colleges Week.
