Saluting Hospitalized Vets

The week of February 14 is devoted to remembering Americans who have sacrificed much for their country. Please do your part.

Across the nation-in VA medical centers, outpatient clinics, domiciliaries and nursing homes-nearly 100,000 veterans are cared for each day. Some are blessed with families who regularly visit them. Others are not so fortunate. So it is incumbent upon us as individuals and as a society to remember their sacrifices.

Though this should be on our minds throughout the year, a special time has been set aside to do so. It is called the National Salute to Hospitalized Veterans and it is held the week of February 14. VA's purpose in sponsoring this special event is threefold:

* Pay tribute and express appreciation to hospitalized veterans.

* Increase community awareness of the role of VA medical centers.

* Encourage citizens to visit hospitalized veterans and become involved as volunteers.

Some of you may already be active participants in this worthy programin February or all-year-round for that matter. For those who are not, please consider paying a visit to a fellow veteran who may be confined to a hospital ward. Helping alleviate his or her loneliness is a deed you can be proud of.

Moreover, urge family, friends and the community at-large to become involved. If you live in a city that hosts a VA medical center or other facility, you are ideally suited to remind local community leaders of the upcoming week. A letter to your local daily newspaper editor is a good starting point. …
