NRPA Loses Valued Trustee and Recreation Leader Barb King

NRPA Trustee Barb King of Delano, Minn., died March 4 at the age of 61, after a seven-month battle with cancer. King founded Landscape Structures Inc. with her husband, Steven King, in 1971. According to the company, one of King's proudest achievements was founding the Säjai Foundation in 2006, a nonprofit organization that promotes healthy lifestyles and futures for children and families. She served on the board of Säjai and was a primary benefactor. In addition, she served on the boards of the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company, Landscape Architecture Foundation, and National Association of Women Business Owners. King was the recipient of the Woman Business Owner of the Year from the Minnesota chapter of NAWBO and was inducted as an honorary member of the American Society of Landscape Architects. She was also a member of the Professional Women's Organization's Committee of 200. "Barb's death is, first of all, a tragic loss for her family, and for all of us at Landscape Structures. She was a tremendous part of who we are as a company, and had an incredible passion and zest for everything she did. She was unfailingly optimistic, and her curiosity and love of learning and life were contagious," said Landscape Structures Vice President Pat Faust.

Former Board Member Sessoms Dies at 76

H. Douglas Sessoms, former NRPA trustee, died at the age of 76 at his home in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Feb. 12. Sessoms served as the chair of the NRPA Council on Accreditation and NRPA Certification Examination Committee. …
