Recently I received a postcard announcing something called "The Link" from the Richland County (SC) Public Library. Apparently it was funded by a grant from someone matched by the library's Friends. The total was about $130,000, I assume. The facility will be in Irmo, "a rapidly growing Ballentine community." Well, Richland County is itself a fastgrowing county, like several others in the south, so there is probably pressure to open new libraries. The postcard describes The Link as follows:

"The facility will feature a video reference system that allows users to see and speak with a reference librarian at the Main Library and utilize wireless Internet access to link users to RCPLs numerous online resources."

Hmm. They didn't say anything about books. So I checked the library's Web site (on which the map doesn't work, incidentally) and finally found an account of The Link. It has books. Actually it appears to be what I used to call a minilibrary, located in a storefront and stocked with a collection of relatively popular adult and children's books. …
