Promoting Youth Activities in the Community

VFW Posts get involved with the young in a variety of ways.

As children across the country prepare to return to the classroom, VFW members should make plans to acquaint themselves with area schools. The possibilities for youth involvement are endless. Here are two Posts that take pride in their communities' youth by becoming actively engaged.

In addition to its scholarship fund, Post 9215 in Upper Nyack, N.Y., helped sponsor Tara Gebbia's gymnastic team on a trip to Florida. Gebbia's team placed fifth in the state of New York during a championship meet. The Post's generosity didn't stop with Gebbia, however.

When Katie Koczynski decided to try out for a spot on the U.S. women's skeleton team to compete at the 2002 Winter Olympics, she needed help.

"She had to have a new bobsled, and that costs a lot of money," said George Donzella, Post commander. "So we donated towards the purchase of the sled. …
