Lighting designer Phillip Franck finds teaching to be an inspiring complement to his craft.

Current Home: Tennessee Repertory Theatre (TRT), Nashville

About the Organization: Now in its third decade, the theatre is housed in the Johnson Theater Performing Arts Center. It was originally a television studio that was converted into a black box.

Moonlights At: Mockingbird Theatre and the Nashville Opera. He also teaches lighting and scenic design at Vanderbilt University.

Schooling: Franck received his MFA in lighting and scenic design from Northwestern University in 1998.

Recent Work: Three Days of Rain, Ain't Misbehavin', Dracula, The Taming of the Shrew, Art, Camelot, Romeo and Juliet and The Glass Menagerie for Mockingbird Theatre; and The Pirates ofPenzance for the Nashville Opera.

Challenges: The TRT theater "is not overly generous in terms of equipment. It only has 80 dimmers in the room, and the space is oddly shaped - and that's why we do this, for the challenge. …
