Joe Marsala is, sadly, a largely forgotten clarinetist in jazz history, being overshadowed by such contemporaries as Benny Goodman, Jimmy Dorsey and Artie Shaw. The IAJRC did release a Marsala LP back in 1981 also titled Lower Register, but try to find Marsala recordings on the market today. He is even less remembered as a composer. Bobby Gordon, to whom Joe was mentor and teacher, sets the record straight in Marsala's centennial year by featuring 17 of Joe's tunes that had found their way into sheet music publication. …
