Finnish Study Finds Tomato Products May Cut LDL Cholesterol

Tomatoes and tomato products offer many nutritional benefits-and new research suggests that improving your cholesterol may be another one of them. A study from Finland found that people who ate tomato products every day for three weeks lowered their LDL ("bad") cholesterol by 13 percent.

It was a small study published in the "British Journal of Nutrition" that focused on 21 healthy volunteers with normal cholesterol readings. The participants , ate a totally tomato-free diet for the first three weeks and a "high tomato" diet (that included tomato juice and ketchup) for the next three weeks.

When the participants' cholesterol levels were remeasured after the "high tomato" phase, researchers discovered the improvement. Total cholesterol levels fell about 6 percent on average and the LDL levels by 13 percent. …
