Tijuana Twosome

HERB ALPERT will have another music school named after him after giving $15 million to the school of music at the California Institute of the Arts, which will be the HERB ALPERT SCHOOL OF MUSIC. In November. Alpert pledged $30 million to University of California at Los Angeles, which renamed its music department the UCLA HERB ALPERT SCHOOL OF MUSIC. Alpert, popular for his work in Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass, co-founded A&M Records, which was reportedly sold for upwards of $500 million in 1989.

New Camp on Horizon

Fiddler MARK O'CONNOR has announced that he plans to introduce a new fiddle camp in New York in 2009. It will be structured like the Mark O'Connor Fiddle Camp in Tennes see and the Strings Conference in San Diego, California.

Awards & Accolades

German violinist ANNE-SOPHIE MUTTER was awarded the INTERNATIONAL ERNSTVON SIEMENS MUSIC PRIZE on April 24 at the Kammerspiele Theater in Munich. She will receive euro200,000 for her work in cultivating young artists through the AnneSophie Mutter Circle of Friends Foundation, to which she will donate half the winnings.

Violinist JAMES EHNES has won the 2008 JUNO AWARD for Classical Album of the Year: Large Ensemble or Soloist with Large Ensemble for the Barber, Korngold, and Walton violin concertos conducted by Bramwell Tovey with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. The album also picked up a 2008 Grammy Award and a 2008 Western Canadian Music Award.

The luilliard School's N-E-W TRIO has won both the 2008 FISCHOFF NATIONAL CHAMBER MUSIC COMPETITION grand prize and gold medal in the senior string division. Cellist GAL NYSKA, violinist ANDREW WAN, and pianist JULIO ELIZALDE will receive $10,500, a tour of the midwestern states in October, and performances at the Emilia Romagna Festival in Italy in 2009. …
