Society represents in Vancouver

The Institute of Industrial Engineers just concluded its 2008 Annual Conference in Vancouver, Canada. I believe the conference was a resounding success. I would like to give a brief summary of the Society for Engineering & Management Systems' (SEMS) participation and a short preview of what to expect from SEMS at the 2009 HE Annual Conference and Expo in Miami.

As in the past, we provided leadership for the Engineering & Management Systems track in both the IERC and the Applied Solutions sessions. I wish to thank Susan Blake, Deb Laudenslager and Eileen Van Aken, along with the entire SEMS Board, as all participated in this effort. And of course, I also wish to thank all the outstanding speakers for their professional, enlightening and relevant presentations.

For the fifth consecutive year, SEMS partnered with HE s Council on Industrial Engineering (CIE) to produce the Enterprise Management Forum (EMF). We also partnered with CIE and the Industry Advisory Board (IAB) to re-engineer the format of the EMF by making it leaner and less expensive to attend, and improved the scheduling and coordination of the EMF with the rest of the conference.

SEMS collaborated with the IAB to produce two concurrent mini-tracks within the Solutions Engineering Management Track. "Taking Flight for Career IEs" and "From IE to Management - How You Take Flight" were very well-received. The career IE mini-track discussed many of the issues and challenges an IE encounters as her career progresses. …
