New IREM Members come from all walks of life

I recently submitted my ARM application for certification after taking the plunge into "reinventing" myself in the fall of 2007. I started out slowly, not knowing how I'd hold up under the pressure of taking a course at this stage of my life: It had been a while since I enrolled in any formal training.

This decision to pursue my ARM certification came out of the realization that I had hit that proverbial brick wall in my career. You know, not going anywhere, no certification in my field and no room for advancement.

This story may not be that different from that of other ARM students or IREM Members. But, I am in my 50s (not going to give you my exact age, a woman has to have her secrets!) and am someone who hasn't been in school for some time.

Why didn't I go for my ARM certification sooner? The same old excuses always got in the way: I'm too busy; I'm too old; I can't afford it, etc. …
