Councils Warned to Prepare Now for Exodus of Retiring Workers

All councils need to face up to the reality of their ageing workforces, the Improvement and Development Agency has urged.

Joan Munro, the IDA's national adviser for workforce strategy, said local government had the oldest workforce of any sector in the UK, with more than 31% of workers over the age of 50.

'We have been urging councils to anticipate and prepare for the large numbers retiring over the next few years and to ensure they attract, train and develop enough people to replace both those in key occupational areas and in senior management,' Munro said.

'Lots of councils have been heeding the message of the importance of this and setting up apprenticeships, skills pathways, leadership development programmes and so on - but we need all councils to contribute to developing the future workforce.'
