Article excerpt

WikiCPA, at www.wikicpa.com, is an open-source website created in May 2006 for CPAs. WikiCPA is patterned after Wikipedia and allows the general public to freely use and create the website's content. In contrast to a discussion forum, where users post questions and answers, WikiCPA' s focus is on comprehensive topical articles which can be contributed, critiqued, and edited by the site's users.

The homepage features a topical index, divided into "all things CPA" and "other." "AU things CPA" offers 12 categories: accounting, attestation, business law, consulting, ethics, financial accounting and reporting, finance, practice management, taxation, technology, valuation, and miscellaneous. 'Other" covers accounting firm profiles, accounting school profiles, accounting resources, and accounting links. An alphabetical listing of every article on the site is also available.

The tabs at the top of the home and main pages allow users to edit or track an article. The left side of the home and main pages provides two sets of links, "navigation" and "toolbox." "Navigation" allows users to login or create an account and directs them to the community portal guidelines and other content creation features. 'Toolbox" links to special pages, a printable version, and editing features.

The center of the homepage attracts users by providing the "all things CPA" index, sections on "Why Collaborate on WikiCPA?" and "How WiMCPAWorks," and a featured article. Each segment of the homepage contains links to pertinent content Individual articles are organized in a consistent format. Longer articles contain a table of contents, allowing readers to jump to a section of interest. Edit links allow users to submit revisions to the articles they are viewing. Internal links for other WikiCPA articles are embedded throughout the text. External links and other references can be found at the end of many articles, along with a list of the index categories where the article is tagged.
