Dance programs and companies move onward and upward.

* Houston Ballet is raising funds for a new $53 million downtown facility to house its offices, rehearsal rooms and the Ben Stevenson Academy. HB officials have been working with the architectural firm Gensler for more than a year on the design of the new headquarters, a half-block site catty-corner to the Wortham Theater Center, where the company performs. Plans include an elevated skywalk to connect the two buildings.

HB, one of the 10 largest ballet companies in the United States in terms of budget, is not alone in its pursuits. The company is currently renting office and rehearsal space at the Wortham, while its main offices and rehearsal studios are about three miles away. Construction dates for the new facility are pending fundraising. Info: www.houstonballet.org -Maureen Keleher

The new building, AU PAC, has five performance venues as well as rehearsal and classroom space. Fall lineups include the first post-Broadway production of the musical Rent (by Adelphi alum Jonathan Larson) and presentations from author and alumna Alice Hoffman.
