Ocean County Library to Help Soldiers Stay in Touch

The Ocean County Library (N.J.) is asking members to donate old mobile devices for a good cause.

The library, as part of the national Cell Phones for Soldiers program, is handing out postage-paid envelopes to patrons at 17 of its branches that can be used to ship these devices. Cell Phones for Soldiers then sells the collected phones to ReCellular, Inc. and uses the money raised to buy prepaid calling cards for soldiers.

"So many people that I know around here have children and relatives in the service," says Meagan Toohey, Ocean County Library senior librarian. "[I know] how important it is for them to keep in touch with their families."

Patrons reacted "very positively" to the program, she says, and about 2,500 envelopes have been handed out so far. It is still unknown how many envelopes were actually used to make a donation, but Toohey says she has quite a few reasons to be optimistic.

"We've gotten a lot of calls about [the program]," she says. "Some people sent their phones. …
