Forty-two students (30 boys and twelve girls) attended the POE based at Assumption College in Worcester, Mass., and directed by Frank Corbin. Students were from Massachusetts (14), Connecticut (6), New York (5), Pennsylvania (4), New Jersey (2), New Hampshire (4), Ohio (1), Illinois (1), California (1), Virginia (1), Maryland (1), Maine (1), and Vermont (1). They demonstrated an extremely wide range of levels from beginners to advanced.

On Monday through Thursday mornings, students received private lessons with faculty members at various churches and colleges in Worcester. In the afternoons, masterclass leaders demonstrated musical styles, interpretation, technique, and practice habits, as well as registration and styles of organ- .. building in the context of student performances. Eleven students were chosen to perform in one of the masterclasses as part of the application process. Topics included Practice Habits, taught by Patricia Snyder, Introduction to the Organ Console (Barbara Adler), Baroque Organs and Repertoire (James David Christie), Romantic Organs and Repertoire (Peter Stoltzfus Berton), Preparing for the AGO Service Playing Certificate (Kenneth Grinnell), and a concluding masterclass on general repertoire with Paul Jacobs.

All students had an opportunity to play for each other on an informal piano recital at the beginning of the week ana on the student organ recital at the end of the POE. Thirty-one chose to participate in the organ recital, while twelve played on the piano recital. On Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, students had the option of attending classes in either basic or intermediate music theory and ear training, depending on prior training and background.

On Wednesday afternoon, participants traveled by bus to Gloucester and Methuen, for a factory tour of the CB. …
