Coalition for Music Education in Canada/la Coalition Pour L'éducation En Musique Au Canada

Article excerpt

All of you do such important work in our community of music education. Each and every one of you is an enabler by helping kids be the best they can be through quality education music in their schools.

As all of you know, the Coalition works to promote the importance of music in our lives-and especially in our schools-through the creation of resources for parents and educators, through the development and dissemination of research, through supporting advocacy work with various organizations and with various levels of government and administration, and through our all-important public awareness initiatives.

We believe that the lives of all children should be enriched by music in their classrooms. The benefits are proven. We know this. You know this. But in order to truly affect positive change in this country, we have to be sure that every Canadian knows this. Governments may listen to us (organizations such as ourselves), but they respond to voters. Administrators may listen to us, but they respond to parents. So public awareness is a primary goal in the work that we do at the Coalition.

We've had incredible success in reaching out to a much broader public with initiatives like Music Monday, our Champions for Music Education, and the National Effort.

In four short years, 'Music Monday' (held on the first Monday of each May) has involved almost 2 million students, teachers, parents and music lovers in a special day that celebrates music education. Our media reach annually with Music Monday is over 15 million, and that's not including the special partnership we have now with CBC Radio that helps get our important messages about music, children and education to millions of more people. And now, Music Monday is a growing international phenomenon as we assist countries like the U.S., the U.K. and Australia in adopting this inspiring event.

Our 'Champions for Music Education' radio campaign, in which we launched a new series of champions last year, reaches out to many new stakeholders as we demonstrate the connections between music education and success in business, medicine, science, the arts, politics, sports and more. Finally, the 'National Effort', our online signatory project (www.weallneedmusic.ca) that invites ordinary and extraordinary Canadians to show their support by adding their signatures on our website, continues to grow daily with over 2,500 individuals and 130 organizations showing their support. Our goal is 10,000 names, so we need your support by adding your name and inviting friends and colleagues to do the same. …
