Dr. Betty van der Smissen

Dr. Betty van der Smissen passed away November 6, 2008 at her home in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Through her life work she made an enduring imprint on the recreation, leisure, and sport and recreation law professions. She earned a law degree from the University of Kansas in 1949, a time when women were an anomaly in this profession. She was awarded a Recreation Doctorate at Indiana University in 1955.

Dr. van der Smissen's long tenure as a university professor was the anchor of her professional career, holding positions at the University of Iowa Macbride Field Campus, Penn State University, Green State University in Ohio and Michigan State University. She retired from universities, but never from academic life. In her later years she continued to teach, write and mentor student research.

Her list of publications and presentations is extraordinary and reflects continuous commitment to research and learning throughout her life. …
