In this installment, Krista Godfrey, a liaison librarian at McMaster University's Mills Memorial Library, dis- cusses her library's experiences with the Second Life virtual world. The following has been edited for style and length.

Q: What telepresence technologies are used in your library? How do you use them?

A: McMaster University has been exploring the use of the virtual world of Second Life. We started with a small space on Cybrary City, where I began an institutional staffed reference service. We offer 8 hours of reference service each week in this space, answering Second Life and real-life reference questions. We have since expanded our efforts and have purchased an island, Steel City Island, where we intend to explore other library services, display our digital collections, and explore new immersive ways to provide information and support faculty teaching and exploration. …
