Preparing for the Future in a Time of Uncertainty

As I write this column, I am struck by the magnitude and immediacy of the global financial crisis, which I suspect many of you are addressing in your personal and professional lives. I use the word "crisis" with reservation, since from my perspective crisis refers to any unexpected, high-impact event that threatens one's well-being. These are challenging times, requiring strategic decisions about the short-term and long-term future of schools, teacher education programs, teaching careers, and AMS. I believe it is critical that we have both a healthy respect for and fear of the unknown.

It is likely that every business, institution, and organization will be affected by what has happened in recent months and, of course, what may happen in the months to come. Over the past 3 years, we have experienced a financial services boon, bubble, and now bust. Every day, we read about global credit problems, job losses, cutbacks, and declines in salaries and hourly pay. A recession in the United States and other parts of the world ma}' be unavoidable, with serious consequences as yet unpredictable.

It is in times such as these that we become starkly aware that we as individuals cannot control events. We can only control our responses to them. Following are some general themes that will be important in guiding our work in each of our separate but interrelated roles as part of the greater Montessori community:

1. Maintaining current enrollments in our schools, teacher education programs, and AMS memberships

2. Increasing enrollments in our schools, teacher education programs, and AMS memberships

3. Ensuring that we complete initiatives already started, while remaining open to new initiatives as resources permit

4. Expanding services and support to all AMS members, including teachers, heads of schools, adult learners, teacher education program directors, and administrators
