My son, Jack, had no trouble deciding on a costume for HaIloween. It turned out to be a popular choice. When I dropped him off at preschool, I came upon what looked like a convention of the Future Firefighters Association - with a couple of Rung Fu Pandas and princesses thrown in for good measure. It was quite a sight: a roomful of 3-year-old girls and boys in their black-and-yellow firefighter coats, hard hats, flashy badges and boot covers, wielding flashlights and dueling with plastic firefighter axes. At a time when imaginary superheroes like Spider-Man and Batman are worshipped, it was nice to see this outpour- ing of appreciation for real heroes. And it's not just the big red trucks and cool fire hoses that Jack and his friends love. They know that firefighters help when people are in trouble.

At this time of so much uncertainty and change in the world, our children can remind us of what's really important. …
