There really is nothing nicer than taking a small girl to see a Nutcracker at Christmas and this year was my first opportunity. Billed as a Child Friendly Performance, the Matinee of The Nutcracker I saw on 18 December at the Coliseum proved to be exactly that. My four year old granddaughter, who takes lessons and is ballet mad, was enchanted to find herself in the company of a huge number of like minded souls, many of whom were dressed in their finest miniature designer gowns!

I've seen this production, created in 2002, before but noted several small changes, which had been given in refinement, and it was great to see that the wonderful origami bird remained.

Choreographer Christopher Hampson and cartoonist Gerald Scarfe are to be congratulated again on their wonderful reworking of this old classic. On the day, Juan Rodriguez's Drosselmeyer was excellent, as was Désirée Ballantyne in her debut role of Clara. …
