Legendary wide receiver Lynn Swann will be the keynote speaker at the general session of NRPA's National Congress for Parks and Recreation on Wednesday, Oct. 16. Swann, who recently was named the chair of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, has been a commentator for CBS Sports since he retired from the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1982.

"NRPA is delighted that Mr. Swann will be speaking at Congress," says NRPA Chair David Lose. "Our work with the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports has developed into a strong partnership over the years. We share many common goals that help to improve the health and fitness of all Americans."

In announcing that Swann will head the President's Council, Pre dent Bush said, "He is committed to using the platform to make America a healthier place by encouraging individual responsibility. [This] fine American will serve as a role model and will join me in working with Americans to encourage exercise and healthy choices in life."

Swann's ties to the National Football League also complement NRPA's mission. NRPA serves as an NFL youth football partner and has worked to advance youth football activities over the past six years. These programs build strong character, promote sportsmanship and foster healthy individuals. Local parks are where many get their first taste of what a high-quality sport experience has to offer.

Swann played nine seasons with Pittsburgh (1974-82) and appeared in four Super Bowls, where he had 16 catches for 364 yards and three touchdowns. …
