Our first Working Mother of the Year had all the qualities of a hero wrapped up in one charming person. Mom of two Kate Williams had suffered through a cruel divorce, a home burned down by vandals and severe depression. Yet somehow she overcame and persevered. She was from Kansas, and as she stood before a decidedly New York crowd when we celebrated her in May 1989- the only one dressed in polka dots and lace- she looked around and said in wonder, "Toto, we're not in Kansas anymore!"

Kate melted our hearts. She was a powerful role model for how women all over the country could triumph over difficulty and take care of themselves and their children by having the economic power of a career behind them.

On the thrilling occasion of Working Mother's thirtieth birthday, we are honoring 30 Working Mothers of the Year - both in the magazine and at our Birthday Bash on May 8 in New York City. They are day-care teachers, high-powered executives, HR professionals, techies, military women and more. …
