OBITUARIES: Clyde J. "Cj" Sambach

Clyde J. "Cj" Sambach, 60 years old, February 27, 2009, from heart failure, at Ocean Medical Center in Brick, N.J. Born in New Hyde Park, N. Y., Mr. Sambach lived in Brick for many years. He earned a degree in organ perfor- mance from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, N.J., and sang in the school's Symphonic Choir. He worked at Ocean County College and at Ocean County Vocational and Techni- cal School in their accounting department. He served as organ- ist-choir director at the Holmdel Community Church and was recently organist at St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church in Clark, N.J. Over the past 24 years, he had concertized extensively throughout the U.S. He frequently served as a conference clinician and performer, leading workshops in basic organ applications designed to provide helpful techniques for the many organists who lacked formal college training. He also served as an organ consultant. When he was not away performing, he enjoyed substituting or playing for a church that was unable to secure a permanent organist.

Eager to share his love and knowledge of the pipe organ, Cj Sambach spent many years developing, preparing, assembling, and improving a special program entitled The Pipe Organ INformance®, which was dedicated to interesting young people in the organ. Through the use of large display posters, organ pipes, and other visual aid props, musical selections, or excerpts performed live, and simple verbal explanations, Sambach provided a basic understanding of the instrument, from both listening and playing viewpoints. …
