Talk about work/life balance conflict: In January, I planned to take my daughter, Julia, to her first semester of college in New Hampshire and then go to DC for the inauguration. But her dorm opened a day later than I thought, and there was no way to change my flight. Julia was adamant that she and her dad would be fine without me. One more story for my Gallery of Guilt!

I am grateful that Julia insisted I go. I spent eight hours in the coldest wind IVe felt since my days in Chicago- but the joy of the crowd kept me warm. After the beautiful inauguration ceremony, Angela and I embraced and took a photo for each other. Who is Angela? I don't know. She was sitting next to me, and we celebrated our new president together. Millions of people who didn't know one another celebrated together. Some got too cold, others walked too far or stood too long, but collectively we felt the seismic shift in our country's culture. …
