In the meetings of the IEB an action was taken by the board to urge all band and orchestras, whenever possible, to close their programs with "The Star Spangled Banner" in the US and "The Maple Leaf Forever" in Canada. "In these days when democracies are so hard-pressed by dictators and when citizens of the North American continent should be extremely grateful for the privilege of living in the democracies of Canada and the US, it is only fitting that musicians should do their part to bring this fact to the attention of those enjoying the music in a country where one can live, vote, and worship as he pleases."
