Q: South Carolina Bank & Trust's assets have more than quintupled since you started at the bank 12 years ago. How do you define success?

A: The market cap of our company is approximately $350 million. Our stock price in the last five years has doubled, so there are a lot of financial ratios you could [measure], but that's not how we judge ourselves. Quality is more important to us than quantity; the quality of the people on this team and the quality of the customers we serve.

Q: Where do you find ideas to improve your bank?

A: I read a lot. The best book I've read [is] "Good to Great." It offers real-life examples from real companies over a long period of time that performed at high levels, but did so because of how engaged their employees were.

Q: Have you ever met anyone famous?

A: Gary Player.We stayed next door to each other in our hotel and were able to play some golf together. I learned a lot from him in a short time. ... He is very disciplined and a great guy.

Q: What activities outside of banking are you involved in?

A: I'm very involved in higher education in South Carolina from a business standpoint. For a company like ours to continue to grow and [for] other businesses to grow in the state having a business school is very important. South Carolina Bank & Trust gifted $100,000 for a new graduate center for the University of South Carolina's Moore School of Business. But my family and my church are probably where I spend most of my time. …
