ICBA: Who We Are!

The Independent Community Bankers of America-the name is a mouthful, but the name says it all! ICBA has one mission-community banks. We are the unified voice for community banks. We are YOUR VOICE!

As the voice for community banks, ICBA embodies the hopes, aspirations and diverse values of thousands of community banks and, by extension, the communities they serve. And without ICBA, I am convinced that our diversified U.S. banking system and Main Street America would be a much different street and under much greater threat.

Reminiscent of Bedford Falls without George Bailey in the classic film "It's a Wonderful Life," would the Mr. Potters-or following a more contemporary script, the mega-Wall Street banks and non-bank financial firms-control Main Street America? Without ICBA standing watch, would there even be a Main Street America as we know it today? Or would we be a nation of "Pottervilles"?

Without ICBA, the voice (and spirit) of community banks would be lost in the multi-voiced cacophony of other special interest groups aggressively competing for attention in the nation's capital. Although community banks make up the vast majority of our nation's depository institution charters, together they hold only 15 percent of our nation's total financial assets. Without ICBA, the individual voices of community banks would hardly be heard at all over the roar made by the megafinancial services players.

With ICBA, the voice of community banks is amplified, clear and powerful-and most importantly heard and listened to. …
