John Wiley & Sons, Inc. announced the appointment of Stephen M. Smith as executive vice president, chief operating officer. In this position, he will be responsible for the direction and leadership of the company's publishing businesses.

Most recently, he was senior vice president for international development with responsibility for Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Australia. Smith joined the company in 1992 as vice president of Wiley Asia. Since then, he has held several positions including vice president of international development, senior vice president for international development, and chief operation officer of Wiley's U.K. business. Prior to his positions at Wiley, he was president of Simon & Schuster's UK Academic and Professional Group, and he also spent 2 years in the Middle East and 6 years as managing director of the Asian subsidiary in Singapore.

Attivio announced the appointment of John O'Neil to the position of chief scientist. He will be responsible for developing the company's core capabilities as well as working with the technology advisory board.

Previously, O'Neil worked for LingoMotors, where he designed the company's main commercial product. He also worked at Basis Technology, Inc., where he was the designer and lead developer for the Rosette Linguistics Platform. For more than a decade, he has written and designed software for search, natural language processing, and machine learning. O'Neil is the author of more than 20 papers in computer science and linguistics and has spoken at professional conferences.

Indiana University (IU) announced that Michael A. McRobbie has been elected to the board of trustees of Internet2. Prior to this, he served on the Internet2 International Relations Committee.

Currently, McRobbie is president of Indiana University. McRobbie joined IU in 1997 as vice president for information technology and chief information officer. Since then, he has held positions such as vice president for research and interim provost for IU Bloomington. While at IU, he has been responsible for creating the University Information Technology Services. He also founded the Pervasive Technology Laboratories, funded by a grant from the Lilly Endowment, and helped the university acquire a supercomputer.

According to the announcement, two other representatives from Indiana University were elected to Internet2 advisory councils. David E. Jent, associate vice president for networks, was re-elected to the Architecture and Operations Advisory Council. Jim Williams, director of international networking and global research network operations center service desk at IU, was elected to the External Relations Advisory Council.

Yahoo! Inc. announced that Elisa Steele has joined the company as chief marketing officer. In this role, she will be responsible for the brand, the global marketing strategy, and the marketing functions.
