Meeting the Needs of Corrections Commissary Supply

Article excerpt

Keefe Supply, part of the Centric Group, is a specialist in corrections commissary supply and management, and as a result, it has its hands in all areas of commissary operations. Keefe started in 1975, supplying single serve coffee packets to a prison in Florida. From there, Keefe focused exclusively on the corrections industry, working hard to provide solutions at every step of the process. A leader in the packaging of products for inmates, Keefe does it all.

"Keefe Group, through its affiliates, Keefe Supply, Keefe Commissary Network, Crawford Supply, Access Catalog, Securepak, and Access Corrections is the nation's leading supplier of food products, personal care products, electronics, clothing and shoes to the correctional commissary market," says Mark DeRousse, vice president-Communications, Keefe Group. Keefe exclusively geared the evolution of products and packaging to fit the needs of corrections commissaries. It currently offers more than 5,000 name brand and private label products, ranging from snack food items to personal care products, tennis shoes, radios and televisions, according to the company.

"Keefe Commissary Network (KCN) is the nation's leading privatized commissary management provider, offering everything from easy to use commissary and trust fund software to the largest selection of brand name and private label products available," DeRousse continues. "Access Securepak is a comprehensive custom package program, designed to allow family members and friends to send packages to inmates, and was developed to eliminate contraband and greatly reduce the time and labor required to process packages. Access Corrections provides technology services to the correctional market, including secure electronic mail, deposit services, MP3 technology, and debit release cards."

Keefe serves correctional facilities in every state, so flexibility in providing its services is key. "Because Keefe Commissary Network writes, supports and owns our software we can (and do) interface with any JMS system," DeRousse explains. "Flexibility has been one of the core building blocks behind our growth, and we interface with third party software packages and state/county homegrown systems alike. In response to the varied needs of state and county customer facilities of all sizes, KCN's development team has written a varied array of order input methods - orders can be entered via inmate kiosk, scanner, fax, phone ordering, real time commissary carts, point of sale at the commissary window, manual order input and Keefe Group's wholesale partners can order via web, scanning, phone or fax methods."

Security, of course, is a huge issue for Keefe's customers and the company goes to great lengths to make sure nothing in the process is compromised.

"Keefe Group offers comprehensive warehouse, product and employee security measures including single point entries into our warehouses, caged areas for third party drivers - eliminating outside access to our warehouse, state of the art video surveillance, tool control signed in and out everyday and more, and our employees are all drug tested, must clear a background check and credit check," DeRousse details.

Keefe offers a complete corrections commissary set up, which some facilities take advantage of, but DOCs can pick and choose the services that meet their needs. "If you want to run your operation in-house, we have the largest selection of products made specifically for the corrections industry," DeRousse says. "We also have the largest inventory and most extensive distribution network - over 1. …
