Making Memorial Day Meaningful

Maintaining the traditions of Memorial Day, like being a strong advocate for veterans on Capitol Hill, is as critical today as ever.

With Memorial Day at the end of this month our motto of "Honoring the Dead by helping the Living" is even more appropriate to those of us who serve America's veterans.

It has been my honor over the last few months to continue to carry our message to our representatives in Washington. This includes meetings with the President, leadership in Congress and testifying before a joint meeting of the Senate and House Veterans Affairs committees.

I have made it known that VFW is today and in the future going to be a clear voice for veterans. In a 45-minute meeting with the President, we said fervently that third party insurance for service-connected disabled veterans is unacceptable.

Meetings with political party leaders and the Senate and House veterans affairs committee testimony went very well. Support on the Hill for veterans and our military has never been better.

Though we may disagree with the Administration on occasion, VFW fully appreciates the President's support on the VA budget and we said so.

But back to Memorial Day. As I travel throughout our country and on military bases abroad, I see how those who made the supreme sacrifice are being remembered: the 4,900 Americans who lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan are not forgotten.

New memorials are springing up thoughout our nation. In California, Kentucky, Texas, Tennessee and many other states that I have visited, memorials have been built to honor those who died for freedom. …
