What's the immediate fallout from the recall of Redux and Pondimin? "Prozac and phentermine are going to become the fen-phen of the day," predicted Mary J. Ferrill, associate professor of clinical pharmacy at the University of the Pacific School of Pharmacy. "That's probably what people are going to take."

Like Redux (dexfenfluramine) and Pondimin (fenfluramine), Prozac (fluoxetine) affects the behavioral brain chemical serotonin. And, like fen-phen, Pro-phen has never been approved for combination use. Ferrill, who lectures on caring for patients with obesity, said there are no documented studies that the drugs together produce weight loss or that Prozac alone does the job. "There really aren't any choices out there," she said.

Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories also pulled Redux and Pondimin from pharmacy shelves in Canada, but at press time Redux and fen-phen were still being advertised at Mexican pharmacies along the U.S. border.
