Attributing value. Staying connected. Tracking expenses. All of these activities are now more easily achievable because of technology. In fact, some HR practitioners believe that the lack of effective technology is a primary reason that some of these functions weren't successful before.

The Expatriate Technology Forum, based in the United Kingdom, is dedicated to exploring technological solutions to international assignment management. The group comprises 20 companies (such as Shell International and Philip Morris) that share information about their practices and benchmark against each other.

In 1996, a work group convened to explore the entire assignment process. The participants divided five overall steps into 70 key activities and rated themselves on each. This was an important step forward in developing a system for calculating ROI. Their next endeavor will be to develop a matrix that helps companies measure value in many of the crucial assignment areas.
