Back to the Basics: Serving Veterans

VFW was founded to assist veterans in need, and that should remain our focus of concern.

As my year as commander- inchief draws to an end, I would like to thank all the members of the "Honor, Sacrifice, Service" team for your hard work and dedication. VFW volunteers make this organization great and do so much for America's veterans.

Thanks to my 54 Department commanders who have always been supportive of our programs and done their best to make them work. Also, thanks to others at all organizational leadership levels.

Thanks to my senior vice, Tommy Tradewell, and junior vice, Richard Eubank, for your support. I will be there for you if you need me.

Thanks to VFW staff members in Kansas City and Washington, D.C. It's been not only a great year working with you, but many years with some.

Thanks to the greatest Ladies Auxiliary president to ever serve, Dixie Hild, and all Auxiliary members.

Let me share my thoughts on some vital issues:

Change - As we go forward, this organization will change. We need to help point it in the direction that is best for our future. We made several changes this year. But unfortunately, because of financial problems and other reasons, some didn't happen like we expected and some will be implemented next year.

Membership - We began with the idea that members should be recruited for the good of VTW, not to win a contest. But, based on financial restrictions, we were not able to do all the things we wanted to do. Remember too, membership should be about quality, not quantity. …
