This is another in a series of recordings that came about as the result of the Oslo Jazz Festival and having some Americans in the area. However, this CD departs from the usual practice of Gemini in that all of the musicians on this disc are from the USA rather than a mixture of Americans and Norwegians. The Norman Simmons Trio as well as Harold Ashby had been working the festival in Oslo. They had separate venues apparently. Simmons and his trio backed up the singer, Joe Williams. Mr. Ashby asked for them to back him on his first leader led session in a decade. It is great that he did so. Norman Simmons must be the most recorded piano player backing vocalists or if not, near the top. Here on this CD he gets a chance to not only back up a fine tenor sax player but also a chance to stretch out in some fine solo work. You really get to appreciate his talent.

Almost the same thing could be said about Harold Ashby. …
