Greg Abate has been reviewed on these pages before, back in 2006 with very favorable comments. That has not changed in the interim. In fact, he has produced even better jazz. Alan Barnes, the founder of this label, has been on the scene for some years working in various avenues in jazz including a stint with Humphrey Lyttelton among other British jazz players. The two sax players work very well together although I think this is their first joint recorded effort. Dexterous John Donaldson appears to be the first choice at the piano for Alan Barnes, at least in recent times. Andrew Cleyndert is a veteran bass player on the UK scene. Beside his prowess at the double bass, he is also a photographer (does this remind you of some American?) and did the layout of this CD. Spike Wells worked with Tubby Hayes and so many others. …
