Jimmy Witherspoon began recording in 1945 and then with the Jay McShann Band. He had done it all in his field including making a movie and singing in all sorts of venues from Carnegie Hall to the smallest of clubs. One thing had remained steady though and that was his pride in always giving his best.

This disc is a fine cross section of his work from ballads, to blues, to some humor and even a bit of rhythm and blues and rock. The last tune is great. He half talks much of the way telling of his life and paying tribute to some others including his friend Ben Webster. One tune, Sweet Slumber, is sung so softly and it seems so different from what we usually expect from him. …
