TMA Elects New Officials at Conference

The TMA and Musicians' Association of St. Louis (Local 2-197) President Vicky Smolik welcomed everyone to the TMA Conference. An introduction to St. Louis from St. Louis TMA Director Rob Hughes followed. AFM President Thomas Lee reported on the AFM and Employers' Pension Fund (US) (AFM-EPF), including a drop in the multiplier to $2 and the possibility of an arbitration that could drop it to $1. A question and answer period followed.

Smolik addressed all present with an overview of theatrical productions and discussed the ongoing problems of the use of virtual orchestras and recorded music. She also mentioned My .02 for Live Music as a possible solution to finding money for the Music Performance Fund (MPF).

TMA Vice President Tom Mendel reported on Pamphlet B negotiations, points brought to the negotiating table, and progress made. He also talked about his presentation to the league about the diminishing number of live musicians in pits. TMA Secretary-Treasurer B.J. Fullenkamp gave a presentation on TMA finances and each director gave a summary of the shows and theater contracts in their locals.

After lunch, provided by Local 2-197, Mark Bernstein, managing director of the Repertory Theater of St. Louis, gave an inspiring presentation about their shows, funding, use of musicians, and educational programs. AFM Director of Touring/Theater/Booking Steve Gelfand talked about Pamphlet B shows that are touring and shows with Alternative Touring Agreements. Local 65-699 (Houston, TX) President Lovie Smith-Wright gave a report on the Diversity Committee and the improvements they have made in the awards. …
