Washington Report staff, readers and friends were extremely saddened to learn of the death of Andrea ("Andie") Lorenz on Sept. 21, from ovarian cancer, at the age of 52.

In the late 1980s, Lorenz worked for the Fulbright Commission and AMIDEAST, administering academic and cultural exchange programs for U.S. educators, helping to triple the number of professors involved in the Joseph J. Malone Faculty Fellows Program in Arab and Islamic Studies. Later, she organized and led many trips to Yemen, Iraq and the United Arab Emirates to expand Americans' understanding of the region.

As features editor of the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs in the early 1990s, among her other duties she was assigned the thankless task of, as she put it, "trekk[ing] down to the Federal Election Commission" and compiling pro-Israel PAC contributions. (See her article, "Uncovering Congress's Dangerous Addiction to Pro-Israel PACs," on p. 35 of the March 1993 Washington Report.) She was meticulous when it came to her work, and compassionate and empathetic when it came to other people.

After marrying Pat Cunningham 10 years ago the couple moved to Calgary, Alberta, where she worked as associate editor of Oilweek and Octane magazines. …
