About 400 NHS dentists earned more than £300,000 in 2007/08, according to figures released by the NHS Information Centre. More than half of the 19.586 self-employed dentists doing NHS work in England and Wales earned less than £75.000, the data showed. But more than 2,508 were paid more than double that. Tne average taxable income for dentists running a practice with a local health service contract was £126,807. For those working in such a practice, the average income was £65,697. Liberal Democrat health spokesman Norman Lamb described the figures as 'astonishing'.

Immigration officers caned off a strike planned for August 5 after the Public and Commercial Services union and the UK Borders Agency reached a compromise deal. The agency wanted immigration staff to take on work currently done by customs officers.

Almost 300 submissions from around 85 different councils have been filed under the first round of the Sustainable Communities Act, the Local Government Association has said.
