Spotlight on Spencer

Article excerpt

The Spencer Educational Foundation, Inc. has been especially busy this past year in its mission to assist risk management students in their educational goals. The Foundation has made great strides in organizing fund raisers, awarding scholarships and creating mentoring and educational programs. In fact, this year an unprecedented 21 students will attend the conference in Atlanta.

Thanks to the hard work of its board members and contributions from RIMS members and chapters and the insurance community, the Foundation will award more than $130,000 in scholarships and grants in 1997. Also beginning this year, the Foundation will contribute $5,000 annually to the Anita Benedetti Student Involvement Program.

This program, formerly the RIMS Student Involvement Program, was renamed in honor of former Spencer president, friend and colleague Anita Benedetti, who passed away on August 13,1996.

Always on the lookout for added educational opportunities, the Foundation is currently gathering input for the creation of a "Risk Manager in Residence" program. Over 250 insurance and risk management professors at universities across the United States and Canada are being asked for their recommendations. Based on their feedback, a risk manager would be issued a grant to spend two or three days on a campus giving talks to classes and meeting with students. The program may begin in the fall of 1998.
