This is the first profile of an independent jazz label in a series that I hope will appear in each issue of the IAJRC Journal. I chose the Gemini-Taurus catalogue first for a couple of reasons : great jazz by lesser-known players and quality packaging - a first rate operation. Over the years I've reviewed many G-T releases and my first impression has become a lasting one.

Gemini was founded by Bjorn Petersen in 1984 (above, with Art Farmer, . His intent then was to record a Norwegian tenor sax player, Bjome Nerem. He felt that this jazz artist needed more exposure on records. He subsequently expanded to four other performers. These would be another tenor sax player, Totti Bergh (at right, with Al Cohn), plus two female singers, Laila Dalseth and Magni Wentzel and a pianist Egil Kapstad. All of these artists are now well represented in the Gemini catalogue.

Since those early days he has recorded many other musicians from his native land and then because of the Oslo Jazz Festival he had the opportunity to record some visiting American and British jazz players along with Norwegians. This has resulted in some very high quality recording sessions. Also he had the good fortune to have a world class recording facility right in Oslo, Rainbow Studios, operated by Jan Erik Kongshaug. …
