In the early sixties, the Vee-Jay label, which had been primarily an R&B and blues label since its inception in 1953, began a jazz program under the supervision of Sid McCoy, a popuar disc jockey who would later attain fame as the emcee of the popular TV show, Soul Train. At that time, the hard-bop movement was at its height and among the more prominent musicians of that style who recorded for Vee-Jay were Lee Morgan, Paul Chambers, Wynton Kelly and, perhaps most significant of all, Wayne Shorter who made his first recordings for Vee-Jay.

Alto saxophonist and flautist Frank Strozier was a product of the often overlooked Memphis scene which also produced Booker Little, George Coleman, the Newborn brothers, Louis Smith, Hank Crawford, Harold Mabern and others. He has often been compared with Jackie McLean, less because of stylistic similarities than for the intense and passionate delivery which both displayed. In addition to the two sessions reviewed here, Vee-Jay also recorded him as a member of MJT+3 and also, along with Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter and Bobby Timmons, in a group billed as The Young Lions. …
