Mick Pyne, a very talented pianist as well as trumpet player, left this world at a far too young an age, 55 years. This is one of the recordings that we have featuring him at length and one that belongs in every collection of modern jazz piano. He began his recording career in 1966 with Tubby Hayes. He made many records with him as well as the other giant of English Jazz, Humphrey Lyttelton.

His two partners also go back into the 1960s for their recorded beginnings. Mathewson worked with Alex Welsh, Tubby Hayes as well as the Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band, Gordon Beck and a host of visiting Americans such as Henry "Red" Allen, Earl Hines, Rex Stewart, Phil Woods, Shorty Rogers to name some. …
